With the changing of the guard still going on in Astonishing, with some other new faces to still show up I do have thoughts sometimes about lightening the cast load. I can handle them all just fine and have great ideas for them all. I just have a hard time sometimes letting go of a character and the ideas I might have for them. So if you were writing this and had to let one go, which would it be? Just a curiosity experiment to see what people have to pick and say Edit: Damn forgot Sunfire on there with Big Hero Six connections and all, lol. So he's a possibility choice as well. Just not on there.

Jubilee is a good fit for the direction of the team, as is Longshot, being a film star of his own world. Shadowcat, Banshee and Justice are equally as weak, I feel. Sunfire is a good fit on the squad, and this comes from a guy who's got a vested interest in the team, heh.
Cheers, Nev

I'm with Raz. On this squad I think Banshee is one of the weaker fits. I really like everybody else on this list a lot and I really like Sunfire on it too. Having read the plot outline when the AXM guest in BH6 I think the direction for Sunfire is wonderful and will not only show a lot of growth but carry some great moments with it too.

Banshee would make for a great solo book. A ton of international espionage and intrigue. He'd really shine in a setting like that.

For Justice I might have some plans to do something else with him outside the X-Men perhaps, have to sit down and write it out and see. With Banshee I like the idea of him doing more of the detective/XSE style stuff that Dino started in issue #2 and I picked up in #4. Thought of doing a Banshee series with that and perhaps moving Kitty over there with him maybe. I agree about her on the team, as I am finding it a bit hard lately to nail her down there. Sunfire is a good fit, he's the resident jerk lol. But he is more than that and I'm working on exploring more about him. I was hoping to do a arc with him and Sunpyre that will show more of his other sides that I'll shoot by you and Erik and such.
Edit: Very much agreed with the idea about Banshee being able to carry his own book and growing well there. I think I might have to give that some real thought as I've wanted to do it for awhile. It's also something that would help me grow as a writer to expand past just the usual straight up super heroics as I have a lot of ideas for things that would work with a book like 'Banshee'. Just never take the chance to try something new. Which the Dazzler mini I'm working on is a real nice departure I'm enjoying.
Can't wait to see the stuff with the Astonishing team in BH6. I'm quite enjoying Sunfire so it will be great to see him grow more and see more of that potential that I can use in Astonishing.

To be honest I think Banshee fits well into the team's mission statement of being the public face of the X-men. He's got got the most credentials, being a trained interpol officer. This is the team where you can't have characters with unsavory backgrounds like Rogue, Gambit or Wolverine.
I voted for Justice to move on. Although his former Avengers status fits well on the team I think his grief should drive him somewhere darker. Give him a solo where he becomes a skull cracking vigilante, or send him to a rougher team like X-Force, Dark X-men or the even X-men. Besides, with Bolt and Timeslip on the team it runs the risk of becoming almost New Warriors X-men rather than Astonishing X-Men.

I agree with Erik and Raz here. Banshee seems to be the least fitting given the whole idea of celebrity being explored with this team. Sean seems like the kind of character who would immeadiately shy away from that sort of spotlight IMO.

I voted for Shadowcat. She's spent most of her life trying to get out of heroism and start fresh as a student, and she's always drawn back in so I would expect to see her somewhere. I don't think she'd be okay with being the face of mutantkind - it's the kind of exposure and frivolity she's always hated.
Although, I also think that Banshee is strong enough to carry his own title. Back when I carried the dib for Siryn, I sketched out a miniseries for her to star in. I'm all for him going solo, especially if someone's willing to take him back to Ireland and Europe. It may not be the central of supervillainy but I think that as a setting, Ireland and Europe would have more to offer on the espionage side. It has an intricate political system, and it has Interpol. Let's face it, an Eastern European backdrop could make for a stunning background to battles/arrests.

Honestly, I never writ a cast bigger than six. Because you have too many voices, and too much clutter to get to the points of characterization and story. I remember watching a documentary from Clint Eastwood where he said the story is the most important element, and that everything else flows from that. I've scanned a few boards being nu here and I've noticed a lot of people are more about symbolism, but I lean more toward story.
If I wrote AXM, I think u would want the unexpected members on the team, the ones who cause the most strife and controversy to build better stories from. Not the goodie two-shoes who are squeaky clean. Internal and external conflict is the root of all stories.

Yes its always good to have some one on the team who antagonistic, abrasive, surly, sarcastic, a loner etc. They actually often end up being the funnest characters to write. I love writing Hepzibah and Astra and Power Princess in Exiles.

Ah, but, see with the nature of this book, you have a beautiful way of injecting tension into the book, naturally. All the characters that fit the mold for the scope of this Astonishing should be just as occupied with their own demanding personal lives that becoming a member of a "team" might well become impossible. It's quite a feat to really build a team around people that are groomed to think of themselves first.

Selfish people tend to only think of themselves and don't make good teammates. Tension springs from moar than bickerin! It comes from different beliefs, different lifestyles, different hobbies. U'd end up with Glee and not the Rolling Stones analogy compared to the Beatles analogy that the Avengers are.
