Midnight Sons #1 by Josh Reynolds
THE GOOD: Josh definitely does a good job with tension this issue. I am certainly happy with how he manages to do what seems like four entirely different scenes, but manages to let you know that they are all connected. I found Dracula’s scene to be the best just because of the morbid nature of the dancing. Can’t explain why but that particular detail stuck out for me and drew me in to the rest of the scene’s happenings. Though never having been able to write it myself I have always found The Darkhold one of the Marvel Universe’s more interesting items and I get the feeling it will be a backbone in this series.
THE BAD: I don’t know if the Prince was a pre-established creation or what, but he struck me as being pretty similar to the King of Jerusalem from “Kingdom of Heaven” with the golden mask and the leprosy. Is that where inspiration from him was drawn? I don’t necessarily consider it a humongous bad thing, but it did take me out of the story for a while little. Despite that though, I think the Prince is a pretty cool addition to the vampire world. And I can expect one moment of story reality distortion for a new character to come in to play with. Also I wish I had been given a lil more about the rivalry between Stroud and Morbius so I could have understood some of the tension.
OVERALL: Definitely a good first issue. Plenty of plots are set up. You get a good idea of who our protagonists are going to be. It ends on a cliffhanger to draw you back in so there you go. All the right ingredients. Good job Josh.
