One thing I'm coming to appreciate about Mitch's EXILES series that I want to get out of the way before I forget is that I like how each of his first three issues are for the most part stand alone stories. There's the connective thread of the mystery surrounding Axel Asher (I've got more to say about him later) but each of the first three issues can be read and enjoyed on their own. I know that fan fiction writers like to jump into a new series with a big, humongous multi-part story arc (and it's ARC people....not ARCH) but it's refreshing to read a series where the writer wraps up everything in single issues.
Another thing I like about #3 is that Mitch takes the time to explain a lot of things that had me confused or puzzled in the first two issues. In the space of five short paragraphs Mitch clarified so much of what EXILES is about that I actually wish I had read this issue first then gone back and read the first two. Yeah, I know it doesn't make much sense but there ya go.
The mystery involving Axel Asher is unfolding a a nice pace and it's just such a pleasure to see him being used. Considering that he's a character jointly owned by Marvel and DC solely for the purpose of having crossovers between the two universes, it's always been a source of puzzlement that he's never been used more by fan fiction writers/editors to have crossovers between fan fiction universes. It would be a helluva lot of fun to see Marvel Omega's Avengers meet up with Marvel2000's Avengers. Or DC Anthology's Superman team-up with DC Legends' Mon-El. But I digress. Keep Axel around, Mitch, that's all I ask.
Without a doubt the best scene in this issue was the one where Tatiana has to transform into a insect/human hybrid to escape. It's one of those gross-out scenes that's equal parts of disgusting and fascinating and Mitch pulls it off very well indeed. Although I think she's got one of the most bizarre mutant powers yet (Adam-X takes the prize in that category) Mitch managed to make it believable. Good job.
The issue was almost spoiled for me by the appearance of The Sentry/The Void, a character I have no liking for or interest in any way, shape or form. But as long as he was just in this one issue I'm not going to bark or bite about it too much. And I'm still waiting to see why the Spider-Man of 2099 is on the team. He really never seems to have much to do or say. Or maybe that's because he's yet another character I'm not interested in so his dialog and scenes don't register as much with me. Another enjoyable issue of EXILES where the good far outweighs the bad.
