YELLOWJACKET #1-4 by Anthony Crute
I liked the very opening scene of issue one. Something felt very genuine about that the friendship between Kevin and Maria. Of course they’re the kind of regular human characters we often see in fanfic and comics used to give some regular insight into the superhuman world. Often these characters are superficial and really do nothing for me as a reader except advance the plot. This time though Anthony made me care about those two characters in a short amount of time and my heart really did ache for a moment at Maria’s fate.
Hank’s intial relationship with Cassie also feels very genuine and homey. There is a definite connection between the two and Hank fits quite well into the role of “uncle”. I really think Anthony hit the nail on the head by having Hank optimistic around a youngster. Sometimes being around adults too long can just be a drag and you need that injection of youth. Makes me wonder if that will be an element of Hank explored in AVENGERS ACADEMY at Marvel proper. They could definitely look to Anthony’s interpretation for inspiration.
Weird science when done right is an absolute treat for me to read and Anthony pulls it off pretty nicely here. If there was any way to justify a Hank Pym solo then going the route of weird science is it. A star from the Microverse growing in Central Park? How can I say that I’m in love? Not only because of the concept, but because the Microverse is probably one of the most neglected concepts in fanfic so I like seeing it used.
Anthony characterizes Hank in a pretty cool way. He acknowledges the guy’s awful past, but shows how Hank is a stronger guy than that now. The confidence issues are still there, but I like that Anthony didn’t just wipe that way. Sometimes people will take a character’s established flaws and go overboard with them or just won’t acknowledge them at all. Anthony has managed to find a pretty good middle ground here.
The relationship between Hank and Jan is also one being carefully examined. He’s taking his time with it and re-exploring the idea of what those two mean to each other. You can feel him, as a writer, working his way through at the same time the characters on the page are. It’s interesting to watch and makes me hope for more Jan appearances in the future.
Psycho-Man was definitely an interesting first choice for a villain for Pym and co. to face given his long history of emotional instability. You see some of that explored, but not to the point of being nauseating. You would think a bunch of size-changers vs. Psycho-Man wouldn’t be a very interesting fight, but Anthony manages to make it very readable and fast paced.
The Chimera Virus is looking to be a pretty good plotline. I’m definitely looking forward to it as it has the kind of subject matter I get into. If there was one thing I would like to see more of it would have to be Scott Lang. He seems to be the missing piece of the puzzle in this title for me. Pym needs someone to bounce off of and while Jan or Cassie sort of provide that it doesn’t feel quite like a good opposite. I think Scott would tell Pym just how crazy his ideas are sometimes.
