Weapon X Crossover Thoughts
When Erik first got me on board at MA to do X-Force he let me know that this crossover was going to be the crux of the site’s X-Line and would really be what set us apart from everyone. I can say with a big wipe of my forehead that this crossover went off successfully and is really a crossover of consequence, especially when taken in as a whole. There were deaths, kidnappings, roster changes, captured villains and injuries all around. One injury in particular I think I’m going to have fun with is Quicksilver having lost one of his eyes. He’s going to have a hard time adjusting and will have to learn to work his powers without depth perception.
I’m really proud of all the work that the guys put into the crossover and as an AEiC at the site I just wanted to give some public pats on the back to the guys involved (Tony Thornley, Scott Redmond, Gavin Devlin, and Clayton Tooley).
[WARNING: Spoilers beyond this point so turn away if you’re going to read the crossover]
The death of Firestar was really the hardest hitting for me. Scott did a great job making it believable. It reminded me of when Tara died in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Justice’s rage at the sudden death was well played. I had known that Firestar was going to die for a while, but I had wondered who on Scott’s Weapon X squad was going to do the deed. Having it be Carnage makes the most sense because Cletus is such an insane wildcard. I figured it would be either him or Gorgon.
The standout character of the crossover for me was Alisande Morales. She really showed her teeth in the XSE Annual and made a lot of tough decisions that I’m sure are not going to gain her any fans in the mutant community. It makes me excited because I can only see things getting tense between the XSE and X-Men after the decisions she has made.
My favorite brawl in the course of the crossover was Gorgon going in on Jean, Scott, and Banshee. I had kind of worried that he wouldn’t get to show his true badassness in the crossover, but he shone through as a true force to be reckoned with and whupped some of the most veteran X-Men without breaking too much of a sweat. He’ll be popping up in my own X-Force post-Weapon X.
Anyway those are just some of my thoughts on the crossover. I’m glad we got through it, but there are a lot of crazy things in store for the X-Titles at Marvel Anthology. We have some dedicated writers putting out some entertaining stories and I enjoy working with all of them. And don’t worry…we don’t have a Decimation coming in our future.
