I just finished reading the Astonishing X-men Annual #1. In this issue so much happens but the writing is clear and easy to follow. Normally in fanfic I find at least one place where I have to go back and re-read what the author has written. Here no such confusion exists and the only feeling I am left with is a wish that there were more.
The character death in this issue felt very real, no last parting words or last heroic effort that kills them, a quick almost senseless death just as happens in real wars and battles all across the world. Also the emotional reactions of many of the characters felt very natural.
My only complaint is of the final conversation between Cyclops and Phoenix, I felt that it was a bit rushed and a bit too quick. I don't think such a major decision would come between those two without at least more of a fight or at least some discussion. Perhaps I am just nitpicking, either way a very solid issue, great characterization, great action, and a promise of much more to come.
