Does the Web really need another top 10 list of Spider-Man villains? Yes, yes it does. Thanks for inspiring me, Meri.
Disclaimer: Underrated villains score higher for me than who I consider to be overrated villains. I stopped the list at 1975, only because I ran out of time to review more back issues. I would probably only add Hobgoblin and Venom to this list if I went further anyway.
1. Mysterio
No one preys on Spider-Man’s insecurities better
2. Dr. Octopus
The best classic confrontations
3. J. Jonah Jameson
Spidey’s first recurring antagonist
4. Lizard
Amazing-Spider-Man #6 – Spidey’s first A+ issue
5. Vulture
First in a long line of underdog villains
6. Crimemaster
His cool look was criminally wasted
7. Scorpion
The first villain made to be able to beat Spidey
8. Silvermane
For the classic Petrified Tablet storyline
9. Stegron
Like the Lizard – but with dinosaur skeletons! Sure, it doesn’t make sense, but it’s so cool!
10. Tarantula
The killer look of that costume, plus Spidey’s first Hispanic foe
Ah, heck, I'm going for 20!
11. Punisher
Yeah, I count him as a villain, NOT a guest-star
12. Shocker
It’s really all about the costume. John Romita did not design a lot of great costumes, but he knocked it out of the park on this one
13. Rhino
Yeah…he works better for the Hulk, but he still counts as a classic Spidey foe
14. Enforcers
A short Judo guy, a cowboy with a lasso, and a big, dumb, tough guy – and they tackle Spider-Man with sheer chutzpah
15. Green Goblin
I wish they had retired the character after Ditko left, but those early appearances were good
16. Hammerhead
Because Spidey goes good with old school gangsters
17. Sandman
A mix of hokey, unexplainable power and awesome, can hold off the entire FF power – neither of which Marvel could ever choose between for long
18. Beetle
Really more for his later, post- Stern/Byrne revamp, but still a long, cool history
19. Kingpin
Yeah, I get it…he’s not really fat. He’s all muscle. But he looks like he’s just really fat…
20. Stiltman
Perhaps the biggest underdog villain of them all!
