Hmm. This one didn't quite carry forward the momentum from Alpha, in my opinion. It wasn't bad but something felt... not right and I can't really put my finger on it. And no, my loathing of Longshot has nothing to do with it. The issue felt really short and the characterization was solid but there were a few groan-inducing moments (I'm sorry, the 'get astonishing' line from Cyclops didn't make me laugh, it made me go "really?" and it was only made worse by having other characters point out how strange it was). I do love the basic concept, however. Having a very public superhero version of the X-Men is long overdue and I find the basic execution here superior to what Marvel's doing with their San Francisco based team (Hell, I don't even recognize their version of Cyclops anymore. Whatever happened to 'Slim' Summers, Mr. Dour Expression? Now he looks like an escapee from MTV's Spring Break... but I digress....). Anyway, I'm on to issue two next. Grade for issue # 1 - C+

Thanks for the comments, Barry. You're right, there was definitely something off about this issue and the line from Cyclops didn't work out the way I had hoped. Like I said in my response to your review of the second issue, something just got lost between X-MEN: ALPHA and ASTONISHING X-MEN and I'm not sure how it happened.
I'm glad there were things you did like about it despite the shortcomings. Given my extreme familiarity with the X-Men, I pride myself on my characterization of them but although I love the characters, the rest of what goes into an X-Men story just doesn't work for me anymore (apparently unless I'm working off someone else's plots, like with Munn on Marvel Omega's X-MEN).
I hope you'll stick around to see what Scott has in store for the series. I haven't spoken to him so I'm not sure how much of what little I had planned is going to end up in his stories but I'm looking forward to finding out.

I think Scott's done a great job of going over your dibs and fitting them into the direction of this book that you've started. He's pretty enthusiastic about Astonishing X-Men and has been good with wanting to honor what's been laid out, so I'll think you'll be pleased to see Scott's slant on this book and what it holds for the future.
