OMEGA FLIGHT 2010: Year In Review
(#1) by Gavin Devlin
The Cast: Vindicator, Gentry, Manbot, Radius, Talisman, Pathway, Goblyn, Windshear and Yukon Jack
Antagonists Faced: Goblyn
Standout Character: Vindicator
Best Moment: Talisman’s filleted corpse
Overall: This is a pretty good start to a Canadian black ops team. I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever seen another fanfic site with an Omega Flight title but someone please correct me if I’m wrong. Anyway I like that the roster, but I wish Gavin had taken the time to explore it a little more in-depth with this first issue instead of spending so much time on establishing the first threat. It should have been 70% on the characters and 30% on the threat. Vindicator is definitely the character to watch in this title because Gavin has effectively progressed her character from the early events of MA’s ALPHA FLIGHT. I can see her taking a darker road and in these kind of series I think the leader really needs to have a strong degree of pragmatism to make it work. I am curious to see though how this first threat plays into the whole black ops theme because at first glance it doesn’t seem to be based upon its mystical nature. With that said, I managed to squeeze Selene into X-Force so I’m willing to be sold on it.

This is a black ops team and they fight against a mystical threat in the beginning. Delta Flight, the mystical area, hasn't been set up yet and therefore there is no one to fulfil this response. However, there is also an element that this threat has plagued them for long enough and it's now time to respond to it with a sense of finality. Vindicator is a character that I had never expected to be invested in - if anything I would've expected to shift Northstar or Aurora to such a team but I then decided that there was something to be done with this character and I hope I achieved some positive character development.
First issues are always my weakest, MA's ALPHA FLIGHT was too character orientated and MA's OMEGA FLIGHT was not character orientated enough. There is a middle ground that I'll readily admit I often miss, but I hope that you and anyone else who has read the title is willing to give it a shot. Characterisation is key in every issue.
Thanks for the review.
Oh, and I feel like I should point out that the credit for the conception of this title goes to Erik Fromme. Erik wanted to expand the Canadian franchise and I merely obliged him in setting up the different squads in my final Alpha Flight issue. He made up most of the teams - he designated most rosters. My input was with the Omega Flight team who I then realised I wanted to explore more. So, kudos goes to Erik for that.

I think first issues are difficult for most people or its the opposite where the first issue is great but people have a hard time following up. I would much rather have the first problem lol. The great thing is you're still a developing writer, but you're already pretty good. So improvement is all I see on the horizon for you. I can't remember what author said this, but I liked it. You don't really know anything about writing until after you've written a million words. Not sure where you stand on that mark, but you're certainly on your way man.
