1970’s BLACK WIDOW 2010: Year In Review
(#1-5) by Scott Casper and Morgan Abbott
The Cast: Black Widow, Hawkeye and Gwen Stacy
Antagonists Faced: The Zodiac Cartel, Watchlord
Standout Character: Astrologer
Best Moment: Black Widow asking Gwen about how it is having sex with someone with super-strength.
Overall: There is a certain innocence to this title and I think that is intentional on Scott’s part. He’s creating a period piece and he does it quite well by peppering in little bits of history from the 70s. What I think I like most about this alternate universe is that the characters actually age, get married and have children. There was a part where Widow comments about her age and how sore she is now after a fight and I really loved it. The interaction between her and Hawkeye was very on point too and I really enjoyed it a lot. There were times when things were a bit *too* innocent for my tastes and seemed to border on the childlike. If the tone was like that all the way through then I wouldn’t have a problem with it, but it can’t switch from a serious level to a Marvel Adventures one.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on tastes? Yes, I like to keep my stories at a light tone as much as possible. For me, light-toned stories are always more fun to read. Won't mean I won't shy away from heavier topics, but I may present them differently than you're used to.

Well I think light and heavy have their places in any comics story. My problem sort of lied with the fact that the switch between the two often seemed to happen between scenes within a single issue. I much prefer a single tone to be carried throughout an issue unless there's a thematic purpose for the switch.
