HULK SPECTRUM: YELLOW 2010: Year In Review
(#6) by Gavin Devlin
The Cast: Yellow Hulk and Norah Winters
Antagonists Faced: Abomination
Standout Character: Yellow Hulk
Best Moment: Norah Winters helping to ease Yellow Hulk’s guilt
Overall: I think the concept of a Hulk based around shame is one that I certainly might have had a problem writing. It’s why I didn’t pick the Yellow Hulk for my SPECTRUM stories. But Gavin tackled it and I think he handled the concept okay considering what it was based around. I would have like to have seen a bigger issue. The conclusion felt like it came upon the reader a bit too fast. And one thing I’ve noticed since reading a lot of Gavin’s writing is that he can be very verbose, but sometimes it’s to his detriment. Not every detail needs to be laid out and sometimes it’s better to let the reader’s imagination fill in the blanks. Norah Winters was a very interesting character for instance, but she seemed to come and go through the breeze. I think part of this is because Gavin’s writing can be so verbose it causes you to start to skim his issues. Verbosity is good if it is engaging so if that style is to be maintained then the writing must pick up.

HULK SPECTRUM: 2010 Year in Review
#4(By Ed Ainsworth) #5 (By Clayton Tooley) #7 (Ed Ainsworth) #8 (Josh Reynolds) #9 (Scott Redmond)
The Cast: Blue Hulk, Red Hulk, Gray Hulk, Black Hulk, Violet Hulk, The Defenders, Rage, Hercules, Sersi, Dum Dum Dugan
Antagonists Faced: Cloud, Hercules, The Fantastic Four
Standout Character: Black Hulk
Best Moment: Rage using HYDRA to get out The Gray Hulk and Hercules out of being blamed for the destruction of Las Vegas
Overall: Ed’s story about the Blue Hulk was an interesting piece because of how he characterized the Blue Hulk. The cerebral nature of the character plays perfectly to Ed’s strengths as a writers and it really seemed like it was completely natural for him to write that character. So it was entertaining to say the least and Ed throws in his usual bit of weirdness with Cloud. I’m wondering what the back story is there, but part of the writer’s job is to get you to come back for the next issue and Ed successfully did that. Clayton did such a good job with the Gray Hulk piece and it only reminds me all the more why I hate that WEST COAST AVENGERS isn’t a more consistent title because Clayton is damn good at writing the characters under his pen. The character beats for everyone in the issue are perfect and he perfectly constructs the conflict between The Gray Hulk and Hercules. I simultaneously like and dislike that the issue is set so far ahead in the WCA timeline because it offers tantalizing hints but I’m afraid it’ll be forever before we see those hints given fruition. The story with the Black Hulk was really innocent, sweet and still managed to pack a powerful emotional punch. Ed did a really good job with the humor and that is certainly not something I expected from him. He made me smile quite a few times throughout the issue and that’s not an easy feat in prose where sometimes you kind of have to force yourself to see the humor. So kudos to Ed for going outside of his comfort zone and writing something different. The story with the Violet Hulk actually brings a new element into the mix with the FF investigating the multiple Hulk matter. It was a little shorter than Josh’s norm, well at least it felt faster. A bit more rushed, but it was still an enjoyable read. I’m wondering if Ed will pick up on Reed having the Violet Hulk captive in DEFENDERS.

Thanks for the kind reviews Brent and Scott (was this Brent? I guess so, as Green and Indigo weren't included. At any rate, thank you very much for the reviews!
I enjoyed working on both Blue Hulk and Black Hulk. They're both very different stories, and I actually feel the most pride and pleasure when I look back at the Black Hulk one-shot. That one was quite difficult, but I am pleased to hear that you not only enjoyed the humour involved in it, but you felt the story. I wanted to show that just because the creature is a Hulk, it doesn't have to fall into "Here's a Hulk - SMASH!" category. When your main ability is powered by laughter, there's not a huge amount of comedy and chortling in a fight to the death. So the childrens hospital and love story that grew from it was really nice and a different change of pace to write. Comedy is something that's a tad hard to write for fic, or really, for anything. People don't share the same sense of humour, and If i am honest with you, I have a weird one anyway, so it's really gratifying to know that I made a smile with my word noise.
In terms of Blue Hulk, well, I wanted to write violence, I wanted it tie into Defenders and I needed to do something mental. The cloud thing, believe it or not, came at the last minute, so I was glad that it went down well!
So, thank you for reading and even more for issues! and thank you for everyone who took part on what a fantastic experiment. Some really great and some fantastic pieces of work there!
