X-MEN UNLIMITED 2010: Year In Review
(#4-8) by Brent Lambert & Mitch Crane
The Cast: Weapon X Crew (Cassandra Nova, Dark Beast, Kimura, Mr. X, Fatale, Alaris, Carnage, Gryphon, Lady Deathstrike, Sauron, Scalphunter, Junta, Will-O-the-Wisp, Chimera, Slayback), Kaine, Typhoid Mary, Vanisher, Unus, Gambit, Charles Xavier
Antagonists Faced: Mr. Sinister & Maruaders, Headsman, The Owl, Friends of Humanity
Standout Character: Typhoid Mary, Lady Deathstrike
Best Moment: Junta & Lady Deathstrike discuss how she eats
Overall: Full advantage of the scope of this title is taken within these issues at hand. The first four delve into a continuing story about Weapon X. While comics and many times fan fiction are built around the heroic characters we’ve come to know and love, I love a story featuring the ‘villains’. Most characters are more complicated than just a simple label of being bad. While some like Carnage fit the bill of villain to a t with their insanity, there are others that have more layers. Brent does a fantastic job delving into many of the Weapon X members and their motivations for being there or what they were promised by Nova. Nova herself is dissected very well with her geneticist side coming out at the same time that her powerful and dark nature is never fully hidden through her façade.
Mitch continues on with stories surrounding Weapon X by delving into a story about their newest recruit Kaine and how they come to bring him in. The history of Kaine and his last appearances and relationship with Peter and Ben are nicely incorporated into the story giving some background on what motivates him. This is important as those exact circumstances are used to convince his joining. This is very much a character piece as it revolves around Kaine but at the same time gives us more on Nova and the power she has over all of her agents.
Lastly is the intro piece to the soon to come Dark X-men series. Mitch presents three stories with three characters that are normally seen as villainous. With Typhoid Mary and Vanisher we get tales of their actions on behalf of their new benefactors that can help them towards redemption. With Unus we get a return of Weapon X, which is a theme that ties all these issues together, and a glimpse at his future as he is brought into that group. Just as with the others these are very much character pieces spotlighting who these people are at the same time setting up where they will be going with the various institutions that they might be part of now.
