ASTONISHING X-MEN 2010: Year in Review
(#4-6) by Scott Redmond
The Cast: Banshee, Shadowcat, Longshot, Archangel, Cyclops, Phoenix, Justice, Firestar, Jubilee, Sunfire and Iceman
Antagonists Faced: John Sublime, U-Men, Mojo, and Spiral
Standout Character: Mojo
Best Moment: Mojo offering his services to the X-Men and giving them a portent about the future.
Overall: I will admit that I wasn’t exactly impressed with the cast for Astonishing when I first heard of the title just because it really seemed to be lacking in diversity, but I’m always willing to keep an open mind and be convinced. Scott does a very good job of convincing me of this roster’s worth. He sets up the antagonists quite nicely and I can’t wait until Sublime makes his move against the X-Men. Scott establishes very well why Sublime is different from the average X-Villain and I hope he keeps pushing that whenever he next uses Sublime. I also enjoy how Scott is building upon Cyclops’ changed persona after being bonded with Apocalypse. It works very well and makes a lot of sense about how Jean’s relationship with Scott degenerates. I just hope this changed Cyclops’ characterization carries over into UXM. I’m kind of hoping that the Astonishing team does accept Mojo’s offer because that would be just too interesting of a premise to run with.

Thanks for the review . I'm glad that I was able to bring some convincing about this cast. At first I wasn't sure what to do with them all as it did seem a strange grouping but now I'm really a fan of this cast together and have great plans for them. Including a bit more diversity too along the way I hope. I have very big ideas for Sublime and he very much will stick as that different sort of X-Villain because I'm a fan of heroes facing things they can't just go in and smash up like usual. Cyclops will be missed, but Jean will fill that void of leadership quite well and in a much different manner than Scott. Funny that you mention the Mojo thing as I had dropped his dib at first but then recently picked him back up as I have some very big ideas for Mojoworld and the X-Men.

Kudos to you for taking a cast that was not your own and making them work quite well. You made a believer out of me. I look forward to the continuing stories of Sublime and Mojo. Will their paths ever cross?
