AGENTS OF ATLAS 2010: Year in Review
(#1-2) by Jamie Primas
The Cast: Namora, Venus, Uranian, James Woo, Gorilla-Man, M11 the Human Robot, Derek Khanata, Chang, Dr. Zu, Tagak the Leopard Lord
Antagonists Faced: The Three Banner Army, Nithhogr, and an out of whack M-11
Standout Character: Namora
Best Moment: Dr. Zu taking being called a century old as a compliment
Overall: I really enjoyed these first two issues and Jamie does a great job in establishing a sort of pulpish atmosphere mixed in with some science-fiction. Reading these two issues made me feel like I was watching an old sci-fi movie, but in an entirely good way. I am marginally familiar with these characters so a bit more of an explanation about who and what they were in the first issue would have helped. It didn’t necessarily take away from the enjoyment of the issue, but I would have like to have felt a bit more in the know. From what was revealed to me, I see the makings of a very interesting and intricate organization. Almost like a super hero corporation so I’m hoping we’ll get to see more of the people who make up the Atlas Foundation in the future. Namora is the standout character to me because despite her anger she seems the most fleshed out and easy to connect to. I think that’s because her teammates comment on her the most. I’d like to get to know Venus a little more though and some general background on the entire cast would probably be helpful as well.

Never having finished reading the original Agent of Atlas mini-series, there are still some things I'm in the dark on as well. Still, one of the goals of fanfiction is to make you want to read the original material, right? Jamie certainly accomplishes that goal.
Interestingly, I thought Namora was the least-fleshed out character, but I'm probably biased by what I know from Marvel's mini-series, because I thought the same thing was true over there too.

Interesting. So who did you feel was the most fleshed out then? I'm curious.

I felt every character hit the right notes as I knew them from the first two issues of the original Agents of Atlas mini-series from Marvel. The first time I had a "Huh, I learned something new about this character!" moment was when Thor was able to recognize what Venus was on sight. So I would have nominated Venus.

I almost don't want to give away any of the back story to the characters of Agents of Atlas because I want people to go out and buy the trade. It's well worth it for what it is. I have not enjoyed a series as much as I enjoyed Atlas in my 25 years of reading comics. The standout character for me was Warrior Scholar Chang with Dr. Zu a close second. Neither of the two are really main characters but I think they want me to write them much more that I intended.
