VILLIANS FOR HIRE: 2010 Year in Review
#1-3 by Meriades Rai
The Cast: Bombshell, Zaran the Weapons Master, The Spot, Mayhem, Ms. Poppyfield and Dr. Doom
Antagonists Faced: None (but Pandemonia is the target)
Standout Character: Bombshell
Best Moment: Ms. Poppyfield commenting on Zaran’s “weapon”.
Overall: This is a very fun set of set-up issues and Meri makes it easy to visualize because his descriptions are so rich. You get a sense of the character almost immeadiately. And anyone who reads my ramblings enough knows I’m a huge advocate for the not so often used characters being spotlighted in fanfic. Meri does a great job of taking characters that aren’t exactly popular or well known and making them shine. Bombshell never really struck me as a character that one could consider leadership material, but she seems to almost step into that role naturally over the course of these three issues. The way that Meri handles these guys makes me want to see him write Thunderbolts or some other villain oriented series. He just does such a great job with them. Only thing that I wasn’t so thrilled with was Pandemonia’s introduction at the end of issue three. It seemed rushed and didn’t match up with all the lush description we had been given over the rest of the story. But, this is a very solid and fun series. I expect nothing less from Meri.

Thank you for the review, Brent. Always much appreciated. Bombshell was my favorite character to write but she's a cheat, really; she's as close to an original character as makes no difference as she's never been portrayed as having any particular personality in the comics, meaning I had a blank slate. It was nice to revisit Mayhem and The Spot, though, two of my fondest remembered characters from Supervillain War. Pandemonia just came across as Generic Mad Villain regrettably, but otherwise I was happy with the way VFH turned out, especially the final scene in the tavern. It ended how I wanted, which doesn't always happen. Cheers!
