I absolutely love the Dark Beast in this title. Jeff writes him so deliciously evil and ceberal. I find myself enjoying and wondering what next deprave act this guy is going to participate in. It's almost artful the way he goes about conducting himself. Of course, it's a testament to Cassandra Nova's power that she's able to pull the wool over the eyes of both Emma and Charles. I imagined Adrienne enjoyed a long bath and a glass of wine after sticking it to her sister like that.
I enjoy the staff at Academy X too. They're a bit unpredictable in terms of choice, but I think Jeff makes them work together. Each sort of fills a niche of the kind of teacher I remember having in high school. Adrienne is the one who thinks she's too good to be there and deserves a better job. Dark Beast is the kooky one who's just a lil bit too excited about his subject. Dragonfly is the pretty average one who you might grow to bond with. Jamie is the like weird football coach that always gave you the creeps.
Though if there is one thing that might be a problem, I think I like the instructors more than I do the kids. With the exception of Layla, I don't find myself really drawn to any of them. I think some future issues focused on just the students without any instructors around would do a great deal in helping to develop them.
Overall if I had to grade this series I'd give it a B. Good strong character work and a nice premise that seems pretty important to the X-Line. I just want to be more involved with the students.
