S.H.I.EL.D.: Femme Force #1-3 by Jeffrey Rist
THE GOOD: I loved the tribute to Spider-Man’s man in the first issue. That was really a neat touch and was probably my favorite part of the entire first issue. Jeff dealt pretty well with Mockingbird’s resurrection in this issue as well. He avoids all the messy continuity points and delivers as clear a resurrection as he can out of that mess. So kudos to him on that. One thing I can say about the writing with this series that it has steadily gotten better with every issue so that tells me that Jeff is getting more comfortable with the series and the characters in it. I like the Tomb Raider vibe to this first mission and there are real consequences here. I just want to see Jeff really play those up more and highlight just how serious a mission this is.
THE BAD: I would have like a better explanation of the cast in the first issue. They all seemed to come in and out of the issue very fast with the exception of Sharon Carter and Mockingbird. I think stronger introductions would have helped make subsequent issues easier to write. Some of the dialogue can at times come off as a little bit over the top and seem forced, especially when these characters talk about men. They almost seem to slip into caricature mode. Viper and HYDRA so far aren’t really impressing me as villains. I want to see the danger quotient upped on them. Viper should be a scary lady that is every bit the equal of these women.
OVERALL: A pretty fun series and it gets points from me for having an untraditional cast. I for one have absolutely no problem with a series where the main characters are all women or all black or whatever. Diversity is sorely lacking in the media and sometimes you have to drastically bring it into the mix. But I look forward to future issues of this because the improvement from issue to issue is obvious.
