STUART FAIRCHILD INTERVIEW
Marvel Anthology:What appeals to you most about Marvel Anthology as a site?
Stuart Fairchild: Its Eric, the boss man. He knows when to put that friendly nudge when I get into a writers funk.
MA: Top three favorite titles at the site. Put them out there. Why do you like them?
SF: Freedom Force, shameless plug there, lol.
MA: Who's your favorite writer at the site?
SF: Jamie Primas. He did a lot of work over on DC anthology and his writing is very solid. Big picture is definitely in his vision. Im really looking forward to his Avengers title
MA: What do you like the most about what you get to write at Marvel Anthology?
SF: I like that Eric gave me full say of what I can do
MA: Your dream title. What would it be? And if you're already on it, then what would be your dream title you'd like to see someone else write?
SF: I had a lot of freedom with my characters in Freedom Force so I really enjoy the series. All the characters seem to fit instantly. If you are talking about a series I do not write, I would love to write the Hulk. The conflict of Banner and Hulk while they forever wander is just an amazing plot line forever. Every time I think about writing the Hulk, the theme to the Bill Bixby series always pops into my head
MA: Who's your favorite character at the site to read about?
SF: Iceman. Tobias does a good job with Bobby Drake.
MA: Who's your favorite character under your pen?
SF: Blazing Skull. The dude is going to be crazy.
MA: Which character do you most look forward to writing?
SF: Hmm....its either going to be Jack Flagg or Komodo. I can't say anything more then that because then I will reveal all my plans
MA: So what are all of the titles you write at Marvel Anthology and how do you feel that they fit into the wider Anthology universe?
SF: I only write Freedom Force. When my daughter was born I only had time to really do one title. I may want to pick up more but don't tell that to Eric. I have really just introduced Freedom Force but the theory for the team makes sense. They are never going to take on Galactus or Kang, but the overall interaction within the criminal justice system is pretty well laid out.
MA: What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer? And/or weakness?
SF: I have strengths??? As a weakness I do tend to procrastinate
MA: Which writers do you draw influence from and why?
SF: I either know or have read a lot of the writers here already over the years. If I would to choose one it would be Tony Thornley. Me and him did a brief role game together for Stargate. Got to love Colonel O'neill
MA: So what do you feel makes Freedom Force different from other teams at Marvel Anthology? Why do they matter as team?
SF: The world is about battling Skrulls or Immortus or Apocalypse. The bad guy doesnt have to be a person. It can be an idea. The X-Men fight against the Legacy virus is good because it represents the fight against HIV. The X-Men also try to battle prejudice. These are real life subjects Freedom Force is facing.
MA: Colonel America. Compare and contrast him to Captain America. How are they different and what traits do they share?
SF: Compare the Colonel and Cap??? Hmm...outside of the star on their chest they are completely different. The Colonel is a high powered telekinetic. The dude has sheer power but might not be the best guy to actually use it
MA: What made you decide to go with Bloodscream and Roughhouse as your first antagonists for the title?
SF: Their connection to Madripoor was key. Outside of Wolverine and Daredevil, no one goes to Madripoor. Have the Avengers ever been to Madripoor? I dont think so. Fantastic Four? Dont think so. The government might not recognize Madripoor but there is a lot of problems on the island and I can guarantee Freedom Force knows that and want to stop it. Thats right, key up the Rage Against the Machine music because I'm calling out the Avengers here and now.
MA: Henry Gyrich is an interesting fellow. What's your take on him? Do you see him as necessarily good or evil?
SF: Gyrich is a good guy, but the way he does things tend to be sort of greyish. To be honest, I wanted him behind the Iron Patriot armor but then I thought it would be too much like that Osborne fellow
MA: So what books are you currently reading at Marvel Anthology?
SF: I read everyone. Cash is tight and the site is putting out some good stuff.
MA: Marvel comes to you today and tells you that you can write any comic you want with any artist that you want. What do you write and who's your artists?
SF: It would be Alpha Flight without a moment hesitation. They have so many good characters. The artist would be Jim Lee. Can you blame me? Have you checked out his early Alpha Flight work? Second best arcs since Byrne left.
MA: Ok so here's your chance. Sell to us why we should be reading Freedom Force?
SF: I hope people are reading Freedom Force now, but if I had to convince them, Freedom Force brings that small character feel on a team. Daredevil, Spiderman, Hulk, Silver Surfer, they are all good as solo people. Put them on a team and it isn't the same. Its the underdog feel I think this cast brings because there is no Thor, or other major hitters.
