Back story for the one-shot Thor story in an upcoming issue of the 1970s anthology:
Ragnarok has already come and gone.
The end of the world for the gods known as the Aesir came in 1941. As WWII raged on Earth, the gods waged final battle with giants and other monsters. As foretold, an entire generation of gods died, including Thor, the god of thunder.
But Odin, who loved his son Thor best of all, could not let his son go completely. So he cast, in secret, many spells before the final battle that bound Thor’s essence to his enchanted hammer, Mjolnir, before the final battle. Even as Thor lay dying in the poisonous blood of the Midgard Serpent, part of his spirit and the essence of all his power entered into his weapon. Odin, while being swallowed by the monstrous wolf Fenris, cast Mjolnir from the plains of Asgard down to Midgard – Earth – where the hammer could not be found by the enemies of the Aesir, but where a mortal, if he was worthy enough, might find it and lift it.
Dr. Donald Blake was the most decorated U.S. Army doctor serving in the Korean War, honorably discharged for a leg injury that left him with a permanent limp and the need for a cane. In 1962, he was taking a break from working on a vaccine for rubella and vacationing in Norway, when he felt drawn to a cave. In it, he found Mjolnir and – while not the first to do so – proved to be the first to be able to lift it. Upon uplifting Mjolnir, Don felt himself transformed into Thor – or a reasonable facsimile, with almost a quarter of the strength Thor once had.
Don's adventures, as Thor, happened much as detailed in the Journey into Mystery comic books. A notable exception is that he never met Loki, because Loki had also died in Ragnarok. But Loki had spied what Odin had done and, with Karnilla the Norn-Queen's help, cast similar spells to bind his essence to his boots. Loki's boots were cast down to Earth as well, where they were found by a stage magician named Sando. Don and Sando became arch-enemies, as Sando's evil twisted Loki's essence's penchant for mischief into far worse. But Sando was believed to have perished in final battle with Don in '68, ending their bitter rivalry.
