With the first issue of this title seeing the light of day, I thought I'd toss up a review.
Issue At Hand: This is a title that was one that had many wondering 'Is it still coming?' As the time between it being advertised and coming to fruition was quite a bit. In the end though the wait was proven to be nothing more than a bother as the issue is very well done. JD crafts a very interesting tale here in the setup towards the class of the Academy. First issues where one is building a team have a habit of being a bit slow because of the nature of doing a recruitment story. While that creeps up a bit here it is done in a way that bypasses the general somewhat stale nature that can come from building a team. The mixture of young heroes that are being used for this title is a good mix of older and newer Marvel which is something to applaud.
Stood Out:
The use of the time flowed well and works in the favor of the overall story arc as you can condense all the building of the Academy in the issues as it was done over a year. Meaning no having to come up with reasons for the team to be coming together in a few issues in more present times.
Each of the characters had a different and distinct voice which can be hard sometimes when writing a bigger cast. Using Marcus Johnson and not making him Nick Fury's bastard child was something I much appreciate as that entire storyline was just ridiculous.
One thing that stood out that detracted a bit from things was the use of the 'mystery' in each introduction. Starting off with a lot of pronouns and such to not reveal who it is talking till a few lines down. While it makes sense in an introduction issue it was done for pretty much every introduction and pulled me out of the story just a bit. Since this was an intro issue and the next few are as well, it's something that of course will lessen over time.
Before I mentioned about the use of older and newer Marvel characters for the academy and how I appreciated that. The one tiny thing that got to me was that the issue was very male perspective dominated. There were women of course, and Pepper had the lead spot being the one building the academy, but it might have been nice to see one of the women that is to join the cast get that introduction spotlight moment. Just a small thing though, and more of a reader personal preference than anything wrong with the issue.
Overall: JD put together a very well written first issue that builds enough of the team and leaves you with some wonder about where other things will go with the title and the characters. Avengers Academy is off to a great start so far.
