NXM #1 by Jeffrey Rist
The Good: From this issue, you can tell that Jeff cares about one character deeply and that is Northstar. I can see this guy shining a good bit under this title. The scene with him and his sister was an honest one, but I hope that Jeff shows us all aspects of Northstar in issues to come. Of course as a fan of continuity I am enjoying Lexington’s connection to Sekhmet. Marvel Anthology’s version of Alexander Lexington so far seems far from the hero that the real Marvel had him has, but I have a feeling he’ll have a better history than being stuck as a bio-Sentinel that’s never seen from again (uggh I hated that part of Messiah Complex).
The Bad: For a first issue, you really didn’t get a sense of the cast. This issue seemed more focused on the adult characters and less on the students. You get a little bit from Dryad but that’s about it. For this title to succeed, there is going to need to be a lot more coverage of the kids and fast. And this next bit is going to sound nitpicky, but I just never really brought villains calling each other villains. So when Lexington called Macendale that at the end of the issue, it took me out of the story.
Overall: The writing itself is good enough, but I want to see more of the actual cast. So in terms of a first issue, it fell a bit short, but I can see Jeff’s passion. So if he can spread that out to every character in the cast this title will be firing on all cylinders.

I deliberately let out the roll call of the cast (in terms of the New XMen because I didnt want the usual "I must form a team of superheros" also, I was still dithering with the cast final selections and didnt want to concretely list the entire cast of teenagers until I was certain it was set in stone

When I saw "Lexington", I was briefly excited thinking this was Lexington Loopner from She-Hulk!
