At the behest of Brent Lambert, who assures me that these are worth checking out, I'll be taking a look at a couple X-Men series at Marvel Anthology. Given the site's history, I'm sure I won't be disappointed with some fine reading material.
New X-Men #1 is written by Jeffrey Rist and was released this month. I love jumping onto a new series!
WHAT I LIKED: A new group of mutant candidates come to the school, and while they are familiar to some, they are strangers to me. I recognize the names in passing, but getting to see these characters introduced anew is fantastic. I get to see these characters essentially built from the ground up, and the chosen lot do seem to be a good mix. A youthful collective makes this seem like a New Mutants book, or an X-Men Academy. I suppose that's what Xavier's school really is, even though we usually just see it as a headquarters for the big mutant guns.
The inclusion of Northstar is interesting, as I've rarely associated him with being at the school. He's always a cameo choice, or a staply when the team ventures into the Great White North.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: A little bit of insider info is present through the story. There's a reference to the status of Genosha, but it wasn't explained. We also don't get to see who is actually on the team of New X-Men, only a few hints. There are villains afoot, of course, but we don't get any real identifier as to their motives or who is pulling their strings.
OVERALL: A quick issue that just touches the surface of a new series. I would have liked to see more meat to this issue, with a better summary of the overall status of the mutant populace. Still a great jumping on point and I look forward to #2!
