Another newborn series for Marvel Anthology's apparently growing staple of titles. Happy to review! Dark X-Men #1 was written by Eric Zane and released last May. WHAT I LIKED: An astounding opening that sets the stage for the tone of the book, and also makes me want to read more. Not only do I feel instantly pulled into the book, but I can't help but run away with my own imagination. Gambit, recently returned from other worlds? A new version of Belladonna? A backdrop that seems to be linked in part to the Age of Apocalypse? Simply wonderful. This first issue does a great job of quickly catching me up on recent X-Men related character developments. The flashback sequence is nicely done and used appropriately. WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: I'm not entirely sure where this is headed. I do enjoy an element of surprise, but why exactly is this group of characters being pitted against their adversaries? The issue was a little short, and I feel that lengthing it a bit to include a few more goals for the reader to establish would have been nice. OVERALL: Great first issue. An eclectic cast that seems to naturally fit together makes this something to look forward to. I appreciate having my hand held a bit, plot-wise, to get things started and hope that as the sereis progresses the writer remmebers that I'm not reading everything the site has to offer. Highly recommended!
