The Defenders #1 by Ed Ainsworth
THE GOOD: The first and second scenes of this issue are great little vignettes. Ed delivers with the last lines of each scene. They’re a great way to get the reading going and expecting the unexpected. Anyone who knows Ed’s writing knows to expect that anyway, but that feeling was compounded with these two scenes. I also really enjoyed the dialogue that was going on between the various Defenders. It felt real and was on point. Nothing about it seemed to be false. Dr. Strange and Namor’s banter in particular was fun to read. Alice Nugent despite her few lines read more alive to me than any other character in the issue. Good job there Ed.
THE BAD: Nighthawk seemed to be a bystander in this issue. He should have gotten more into the action and had a few lines. I would have liked to have seen how he felt about Nugent’s attack.
OVERALL: Damn good first issue and you can tell Ed has an idea of what he wants this series to be. I expect quirky adventures with strong characterization.
