Since the Avengers topic drew some discussion, let's see if this one does. We all know everyone here has different views on what the X-Men should be about. So, without getting into argument, tell us what your ideal roster is?
Mine:
Cyclops
Jean
Namor (taking a page from Kenn's Uncanny X-Men, which pre-dated Dark X-Men)
Scarlet Witch
Beast
Mystique

If I was going to keep to a six person team like you did, it would be:
Cyclops Phoenix/Marvel Girl (Jean) Nightcrawler Shadowcat Rogue Wolverine

Don't mess with the best:
Cyclops Marvel Girl (Jean) Beast (original blue) Iceman Archangel (metal wings) Wolverine
All the X-Factor version of the original team needed was the wildcard rule-breaker. The carefree Beast and the dark Angel and the mature yet still young prankster Bobby, the responsible and loving Jean and Cyke. Would love this book. If you added a 7th and a second woman to even things out, you gotta go Storm or Rogue (with Ms. Marvel powers).
Speak of, question: What version was better, Rogue with those extra powers or without? I say, hands down, with. Since she lost them, Rogue has lost me as a character, and she STANK on the big screen because she did shit! And Ultimate Rogue was an Ultimate Bore!
Give'm back and letter the Southern Belle get back to handling her business!

I know Mike Carey wiped her templates, but that only means the residual bio-energy she absorbed was wiped from her system. Not the memories that her body replicated, or rather put it synthesized. She would be a formidable street leveler, and if she needed a boost, she could always absorb whoever was on hand’s brute power now that she has full control of her abilities. -Mick

Lets see........ Cyclops Jean Grey Wolverine Rogue Gambit Beast Nightcrawler Angel Iceman Colossus Shadowcat Ah, the Claremont/Lee era roster. Yeah, that was a great roster. I find it sad reading what Claremont had planned. It's kind of relieving he didn't get to do what he wanted to do. -Mick

Probably sounds like trying to pimp my titles or such lol, but the rosters of my Astonishing title here (Cyclops, Phoenix, Kitty, Jubilee, Longshot, Iceman, Banshee, Sunfire, Justice, and Firestar) and the Uncanny I write with Doug at Marvel Reborn (Cyclops, Phoenix, Angel, Iceman, Wolverine, Storm, Kitty, Colossus, Cannonball, Rogue, Joseph, Quicksilver, Mimic, Multiple Man, Magma) are my ideal rosters cause I love writing them and they offer a lot of distinct personalities.

I could cop out and say my Uncanny team, but that's not true.
Cyclops Rogue Wolverine Iceman Colossus Chamber Cannonball Nightcrawler Marvel Girl (Rachel) Shadowcat Pixie
This team seems to have a great balance in power and personality. First of all, Scott is the essential X-Men leader, but he needs to have a strong #2, which is where Rogue falls in. You've also got members for each generation of the team- Scott and Bobby from the originals, Logan, Peter, Kurt, Rogue, Rachel and Kitty from the Claremont era, Sam from the New Mutants, Jono from Generation X and Pixie from the latest era.

The team of X-Men I would most love to have a chance to write would be:
Rogue (leader) Havok Polaris Quicksilver Siryn Warpath Meltdown Chamber Husk
In a darker, black ops X-Force kind of title.

Tough question but I think I'd go with this team:
Cyclops Wolverine / Gambit Nightcrawler Shadowcat Jubilee Banshee Psylocke Iceman
With Logan and Remy, they'd be more recurring characters than members because although I like them on the team, I also like them on their own a lot more.
And MC, I prefer Rogue with Carol's powerset but I'm loving her in X-MEN LEGACY. It's the most interesting she's been since the Outback era.

My team would be full of ass-kickers:
Cyclops Wolverine Archangel Cable Bishop (not the insane babykiller) Cannonball Storm Beast Iceman Phoenix (Rachel)

If anyone liked my roster earlier... well, let's say you may be seeing it soon. Maybe.
